Press release | 08.09.2011

THE HAGUE PROUDLY PRESENTS A NEW ANNUAL FILMFESTIVAL
Indian Film Festival The Hague focuses on cinematic art from India!

This October the spectrum of what Holland has to offer culturally will be enriched with the introduction of an exciting new film festival, the very first edition of the ‘Indian Film Festival The Hague’ (IndianFFTH). From October 5th through October 9th this colorful five-day festival will display a broad panorama of Indian cinematography.

The festival offers a selection of art house movies, documentaries and popular mainstream films, most of which have never been shown before in Holland. The IndianFFTH presents itself as a national stage for Indian cinema with groundbreaking programming. The festival organization hopes to attract lovers of Hindi films but also wants to challenge the more general (western) movie buff to experience this type of cinema, which is so different from what we are used to in Holland.

On Wednesday October 5th The ambassador of India, H.E. Ms. Bhaswati Mukherjee and the alderman of culture of The Hague, Marjolein de Jong, will officially open the Indian Film Festival The Hague. The kickoff of the festival will happen at the Filmhuis The Hague in the presence of award winning director Rituparno Ghosh whose film Nouka Dubi (Boat Wreck) will have its Dutch premiere that night at the IndianFFTH. Rituparno Ghosh is globally renowned as a director; he received no less than eight national and several international awards for his productions.

With ‘Nouka Dubi’ based on a novel by Rabindranath Tagore, the IndianFFTH honors the 150th anniversary of the birth of Tagore, poet, novelist and playwright and also India’s first Nobel Prize winner. The story of ‘Nouka Dubi’ exposes the institution of marriage in a touching manner. Ramesh finds the love of his life in the beautiful Hemnali. But the tender blossoming of their love is abruptly crushed when Ramesh's father decides that his son’s heart belongs to another. Then fate intervenes; a boating accident changes the life of Ramesh forever.

The IndianFFTH will take place at three locations: the Filmhuis Den Haag, Pathé Buitenhof and the new Theater Dakota (Escamp). The complete programme will soon be published on www.indianffth.nl
